Ochre sea stacks, hidden grottos and 300 days of sunshine on the Atlantic
The Algarve is Portugal's sun-drenched southern coast and one of Europe's most celebrated beach destinations — and yet it retains a raw, dramatic beauty that mass tourism has never quite managed to diminish. The western Algarve is Atlantic wild: huge swells, natural arches and sea stacks carved from the golden-orange cliffs at Sagres and Lagos. Moving east, the coast softens into the sheltered, calm waters of the Ria Formosa lagoon system, where barrier islands accessible only by boat harbour some of the region's most pristine beaches. Inland, white villages, cork oak forests and some of the world's most celebrated golf courses await.
