Castle-topped headland, Playa del Postiguet and the gateway to the Costa Blanca
Alicante is the Costa Blanca's capital city — a genuine Spanish city with a castle, a seafront promenade (the Explanada), excellent tapas bars and a beach that sits directly in the shadow of the 16th-century Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Unlike some of Spain's more thoroughly touristic coastal cities, Alicante functions primarily for its own residents: the morning fish market, the Sunday market in El Arenal, and the February Hogueras festival (when giant papier-mâché sculptures are burned in the street) are all local institutions that visitors can participate in. The surrounding Costa Blanca — from Altea in the north to Torrevieja in the south — offers 200km of coastline ranging from sheltered family-friendly bays to dramatic limestone capes.
