Cliff-hanging villages, pastel terraces and the bluest sea in Italy
The Amalfi Coast is 50 kilometres of organised chaos and extraordinary beauty along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula. Pastel-coloured houses stack up impossibly steep hillsides above a sea of vivid blue, while the winding coast road — carved into the cliffs in the 1800s — connects a string of villages each more picturesque than the last: Positano with its church dome visible from the sea; Amalfi with its Arab-Norman cathedral; Ravello with its clifftop gardens looking out over the Gulf of Salerno. The coast is also the home of limoncello, sfogliatella pastries and some of southern Italy's finest seafood.
When to go: May, June and September are ideal — warm water, long days and manageable crowds. July–August is extremely busy.
The best months to visit Amalfi Coast are July, August. Peak season is July with the best combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall.
