365 beaches, sailing regattas and a beautifully preserved colonial harbour
Antigua claims 365 beaches — one for every day of the year — and while that figure may be optimistic, the island's coastline of crescent bays, sheltered harbours and offshore reefs is genuinely extraordinary. English Harbour, on the south coast, is one of the Caribbean's most beautiful settings: a UNESCO-tentative natural harbour where Admiral Nelson's fleet once sheltered, today surrounded by restored Georgian dockyard buildings and filled with yachts during the annual Sailing Week regatta. Half Moon Bay on the east coast is frequently cited among the Caribbean's finest beaches. The island is small enough to explore fully in a week without rushing.
