Volcanic calderas, whale watching and Europe's most dramatic mid-ocean island group
The Azores are nine Portuguese volcanic islands in the middle of the North Atlantic, roughly equidistant from Lisbon and New York, and they are unlike anywhere else in Europe. São Miguel — 'the Green Island' — has the dramatic calderas of Sete Cidades and Furnas, where hot springs and geysers bubble beside a volcanic lake and you can cook a traditional cozido stew underground. Faial has a caldera that last erupted in 1957 and a marina that was historically a transatlantic yacht waypoint. The whale watching in the Azores is among the world's best — sperm whales, blue whales and various dolphin species are resident here year-round.
