The Society Islands' jewel: a volcanic peak ringed by the most perfect lagoon on earth
Bora Bora is French Polynesia's most celebrated island and, for many, the template against which all tropical island destinations are measured. A central volcanic peak — Mount Otemanu — rises to 727m above a lagoon of such extraordinary colour that photographs of it routinely look over-processed. The iconic overwater bungalows that now feature in beach resort advertising worldwide were invented here in the 1960s. The lagoon's shallow reef sections are alive with blacktip reef sharks, rays and colourful fish that can be fed by hand, while deeper areas offer exceptional drift diving.
