Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the Atlantic, 570km off the coast of West Africa, and its culture is a unique fusion of Portuguese colonial heritage and West African tradition — the Creole music of morna, made famous internationally by Cesária Évora, captures this bittersweet blend perfectly. The islands divide sharply by character: Santiago has the historic capital of Cidade Velha (a UNESCO site); Sal and Boa Vista are flat, sandy and surf-beaten, with Atlantic trade winds that make them some of the world's best kitesurfing destinations; while São Vicente's Mindelo is the archipelago's cultural capital, with a vibrant live music scene.
