Venetian town, olive groves and the Ionian Sea's most characterful island
Corfu is the Ionian Sea's most northerly Greek island, separated from Albania and mainland Greece by a narrow channel, and it has a character distinctly different from the Aegean islands — shaped more by Venice (which ruled for 400 years) than by the Ottoman empire. The Old Town of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of Venetian-era alleyways, Italianate churches and French-colonial arcades. The island's interior is one of Greece's most lush — an ancient landscape of silver-green olive groves, cypress trees and stone villages that has inspired writers from Homer to Gerald Durrell, who described it in 'My Family and Other Animals'.
