Aphrodite's birthplace, crusader castles and Mediterranean sunshine without crowds
Cyprus is the eastern Mediterranean's largest island and one of its most historically layered — a place where Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans and British have all left their mark on the landscape, architecture and culture. The Troodos Mountains in the interior offer painted Byzantine churches, mountain villages and cooler temperatures in summer. The coast delivers excellent beaches — Nissi Beach near Ayia Napa, the Aphrodite Hills beaches near Paphos, the windswept Akamas Peninsula — and some of the Mediterranean's clearest water. Paphos, the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite, has both a well-preserved Roman mosaic floor and a Crusader castle.
