Portuguese churches, trance parties, spice markets and endless Arabian Sea beaches
Goa is India's smallest state and its most famous beach destination — a place where 450 years of Portuguese colonialism left an indelible mark on the architecture, cuisine and personality of a stretch of the Arabian Sea coast like no other in India. The beaches divide naturally into north and south: North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna) is livelier, louder and more party-oriented; South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Colva) offers longer, quieter beaches and a slower pace. Between and behind the coast, villages of whitewashed Baroque churches, red-roofed Portuguese villas and spice plantations await exploration.
