A continent in miniature: sand dunes, laurel forests and year-round sun
Gran Canaria earns its nickname — 'a continent in miniature' — through the extraordinary diversity of its landscapes. In the south, the Maspalomas dunes form a mini-Sahara of golden sand meeting the Atlantic Ocean. In the interior, the island rises to the Roque Nublo — a volcanic monolith at 1,800m surrounded by ancient laurel forest. The north is green and lush, the west has dramatic sea cliffs, and Las Palmas, the capital, is a vibrant city with a Renaissance old quarter, a famous beach and one of Spain's best dining scenes. All of this is accessible within an island roughly 50km across.
