Dragons, pink beaches and some of the world's most biodiverse waters
Komodo National Park is one of Indonesia's most spectacular destinations — a group of islands between Sumbawa and Flores where the world's largest living lizard, the Komodo dragon, rules a landscape of dry savannah and volcanic rock. The dragons are genuinely prehistoric in appearance and genuinely dangerous; watching them in their natural habitat is one of nature's great encounters. But the park's underwater world may be even more remarkable: the nutrient-rich waters between the islands support a biodiversity found nowhere else, with manta rays cleaning stations, whale sharks, sea turtles and some of the densest fish populations in the Indo-Pacific. Pink Beach — its unusual colour from red coral fragments — is one of only seven pink sand beaches in the world.
When to go: April to December is the best time to dive. Dragon trekking is possible year-round. July and August are driest.
