99 tropical islands, duty-free shopping and a UNESCO Geopark of karst geology
Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off Malaysia's northwest coast, near the Thai border, and its designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark reflects the extraordinary geological story written in its karst limestone formations. The main island has a relaxed, duty-free atmosphere quite different from the busy resorts of Thailand: Pantai Cenang on the west coast is the main beach strip, lined with restaurants and beach bars that never quite reach the intensity of a Koh Samui or Phuket. The island rewards exploration: the Langkawi Cable Car rises to a ridge with views across the archipelago to the Thai coast, and the mangrove rivers and eagle-spotting boat trips are genuinely spectacular.
When to go: November to April is the dry season. Being north of the Intertropical Convergence Zone means it avoids the worst of the Malaysian monsoon.
The best months to visit Langkawi are January, February, December. Peak season is February with the best combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall.
