Seven hills, fado music, pastel de nata and the Tagus River meeting the Atlantic
Lisbon is one of Europe's oldest and most beautiful capital cities — a place of pastel-coloured houses stacked on seven hills, connected by historic trams, viewpoints (miradouros) looking out over the Tagus estuary, and a food scene that has transformed from humble to internationally celebrated in less than a decade. The historic neighbourhoods of Alfama, Mouraria and Bairro Alto each have distinct characters; the Belém waterfront has the Tower of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery; and the Sintra hills to the west, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contain a fairytale concentration of palaces and castles. Lisbon is not a beach city but is surrounded by excellent beaches — Cascais and Estoril to the west, Setúbal to the south.
