Pristine beaches, perfect surf and the unspoilt neighbour to Bali
Lombok sits just 35km east of Bali but feels worlds away — quieter, less crowded and with a distinct Sasak culture that gives it a character entirely its own. The island divides into distinct regions: the Gili Islands off the northwest coast are car-free tropical idylls with excellent diving; Kuta Lombok (unrelated to Bali's Kuta) is a surfing mecca with dramatic horseshoe bays of white sand and turquoise water; and the south coast's beaches, like Selong Belanak and Mawun, are pristine and largely undeveloped. Dominating the north, Gunung Rinjani — Indonesia's second-highest volcano — rewards the hardy with crater lakes and sunrise views across to Bali.
When to go: May to October is dry season, offering the best beach and trekking conditions. The Gilis are calm year-round.
The best months to visit Lombok are April, May, June. Peak season is May with the best combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall.
