Knights of St John, limestone cliffs, the Blue Lagoon and 7,000 years of history
Malta is the Mediterranean in miniature — a small archipelago that packs 7,000 years of history, extraordinary prehistoric temples, dramatic clifftop fortifications, crystal-clear diving waters and a year-round mild climate into an area the size of a large city. Valletta, the baroque capital built by the Knights of St John in the 1500s, is one of Europe's finest small capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gozo, the quieter sister island, has a completely different, agricultural character. And Comino's Blue Lagoon — though now very famous — retains a clarity of water that makes it genuinely exceptional.
