Untouched Indian Ocean islands, whale sharks and dhow-sailed horizons
Mozambique is Africa's most underrated beach destination — a country with 2,500km of Indian Ocean coastline that sees a fraction of the visitors of its better-known neighbours. The Bazaruto Archipelago, a short flight north of the capital Maputo, is a national park of five islands surrounded by turquoise shallows so clear that dugongs, whale sharks and manta rays are visible from the surface. The Quirimbas Archipelago further north is even more remote: a string of coral islands where Arab, Portuguese and African history collides in the ruins of ancient trading posts, and where snorkelling and fishing villages remain as they have for centuries.
When to go: April to October is dry season with the best beach weather. November to March sees rain and occasional cyclones in the south.
