Fjord-like wadis, ancient forts, frankincense souks and the Arabian Sea
Oman is the Middle East's most underrated travel destination — a country that shares the Gulf with Dubai and Abu Dhabi but operates at a completely different speed and has retained an authenticity that more tourist-heavy neighbours have lost. The Musandam Peninsula in the north is a dramatic fjordland of sea inlets and mountain villages accessible only by traditional dhow. Wahiba Sands in the interior is one of the Arabian Peninsula's great desert experiences. Along the Dhofar coast in the south, monsoon rains between June and September create a lush green landscape bizarrely at odds with the arid surroundings — a phenomenon called the khareef that Omanis travel from across the region to witness.
When to go: October to April is ideal on the north coast. The Dhofar region (Salalah) is uniquely green June to September during khareef.
The best months to visit Oman are March, April, May. Peak season is May with the best combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall.
