About Pemba Island

Tanzania's forgotten spice island with pristine reefs and almost no tourists

Pemba is the quieter, wilder, less-visited sibling of Zanzibar — 60km to the north and a world away in terms of atmosphere. The island is densely forested with clove trees (it was historically the world's largest clove producer) and its indented coastline of mangrove creeks and coral cliff headlands conceals some of Tanzania's most pristine reefs. The diving here is considered among the best in the entire Indian Ocean: walls of coral dropping to great depths, manta rays, whale sharks in season and enough fish diversity to keep any underwater photographer busy for weeks. There are almost no mass-market tourists.

When to go: July to October is the best season with calm seas and excellent diving visibility.
