An active volcano, dramatic cirques and the most intense nature in the Indian Ocean
Réunion is the Indian Ocean's best-kept secret — a French overseas territory that combines Caribbean-standard beaches on its west coast with one of the world's most active volcanoes and hiking terrain so dramatic it has earned UNESCO designation as a World Heritage Site. The volcanic interior is divided into three cirques — giant natural amphitheatres of sheer cliff walls and ancient rainforest — that offer some of the world's great hikes. On the coast, Boucan Canot and Saint-Gilles have the island's best beaches and water sports, while the east coast has a wild, battered character more reminiscent of Brittany than the tropics.
When to go: May to November is dry season on the west coast. December to April sees rain and cyclone risk.
