Rio de Janeiro is one of the world's most visually spectacular cities — a place where granite mountains erupt from a tropical coastline, the city's favelas cascade down hillsides in coloured tiers, and beaches of world-famous beauty stretch between rocky headlands. Copacabana and Ipanema are more than beaches — they are stages for the carioca way of life: volleyball, football, capoeira, samba and an outdoor culture that treats the beach as a second living room. The cable car to Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) and the cog railway to Christ the Redeemer offer two of the world's great viewpoints. Carnival in February transforms the city into the world's largest street party.
