La Maddalena, the Costa Smeralda and Italy's most fiercely proud island culture
Sardinia is Italy's second-largest island and its most individually characterful — a place with its own language, its own history and a pride in its distinctness from the mainland that is palpable in every village and market. The northeast coast — the Costa Smeralda — was developed in the 1960s by the Aga Khan into the Mediterranean's most exclusive resort strip, and Porto Cervo retains a glamour entirely its own. But the rest of the island is untouched: the southwestern beaches of Chia and Porto Pino have a wild, natural beauty; the interior nuragic towers are among Europe's most mysterious ancient monuments; and the food — pane carasau flatbread, bottarga, Cannonau wine, suckling pig — is one of Italy's most distinctive regional cuisines.
