The twin Pitons, drive-in volcano and the Caribbean's most dramatic scenery
St Lucia is quite possibly the most dramatically beautiful island in the Caribbean. The twin Piton peaks — Gros Piton and Petit Piton — rise from the sea like ancient cathedrals near the town of Soufrière, forming an image so iconic it appears on the island's national flag. The island is also home to the world's only drive-in volcano (Sulphur Springs), therapeutic mud baths, botanical gardens of extraordinary richness and a rainforest interior traversed by hiking trails. The beaches are more intimate than some Caribbean rivals but the water is exceptional: Anse Chastanet and Sugar Beach sit beneath the Pitons in settings that would be hard to improve upon.
When to go: December to May is dry season. The southwest (leeward) coast is sheltered year-round.
The best months to visit St Lucia are January, February, March. Peak season is March with the best combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall.
